You know, when a simple ingredient transforms dinner from “meh” to memorable? Well, that’s my kind of mid-week dinner! And one of the easiest ways to do this is by using spice blends. So let’s talk about “Funky Ouma” - A new range of flavour bombs that can turn the simplest of meals into something that packs a flavour punch. Hailing from South Africa with natural, no-MSG ingredients, these spice blends and oils are the secret sauce in everything from breakfast eggs to slow-roasted meats.
Each of these blends is naturally gluten-free, vegan-friendly, and crafted without preservatives or artificial colours — which means you’re adding flavour without the junk. We love that!
Drizzle this ruby-red oil over fresh salads, mix through warm pasta with garlic and herbs, or spoon over roasted veg for a smoky, spicy kick. It’s also brilliant blended with a squeeze of lemon and a pinch of sea salt as a quick dipping oil for crusty bread.
This blend is tailor-made for ocean catches. Season basa, snapper or prawns with a generous pinch before pan-frying or grilling, and finish with a squeeze of lemon. A simple grilled fish with citrus herbs is elevated with this spice — try it with a green salad and warm couscous for a breeze of summer at dinner.
Sprinkle chilli salt on avocado toast, scrambled eggs, or roast potatoes. It’s smoky and bold without overpowering, and adds gorgeous depth to soups and stews like a shrimp paella or spicy fried rice. One TikTok-worthy idea is to rim cocktail glasses (think Bloody Mary) with chilli salt for an extra little punch.
Sweet but sophisticated — this is your go-to for toast, roasted pears, baked apples, or even sprinkled over pancakes with a dollop of yoghurt. You can even jazz up your morning latte with a little shake on top.
Want instant savoury flavor without chopping garlic and onions? This is your cheat code. Use it as a rub on roast chicken, sprinkle over sautéed mushrooms, or finish off mashed potatoes with a generous hit of umami richness.
This one plays beautifully with barbecues and oven roasts. Mix with olive oil and lemon juice, rub into chicken, lamb, or veg, and let it sit for at least 20 minutes before cooking — you’ll taste the difference. Think charred lamb chops, smoky grilled corn or spiced sweet potato wedges dusted with this blend.
Sprinkle it over steaks before they hit the grill, rub it onto chicken thighs with a drizzle of olive oil, or toss it through roast potatoes while they’re still hot from the oven. It’s also surprisingly good on buttered corn, fried eggs, sliced tomatoes, or even avocado on toast.
Toss prawns in olive oil, garlic, and a good shake of chilli salt. Pan-fry until just pink and serve on fragrant lime rice with a scattering of fresh coriander and lemon zest.
Chop seasonal root veg like carrots, pumpkins and sweet potatoes, drizzle with olive oil, and sprinkle with black garlic salt before roasting until golden brown.
Rub chicken thighs with olive oil and African BBQ spice and leave to marinate for an hour. Then pop on the BBQ grill til cooked through. Serve with a simple green salad and couscous.
Swirl butter and cinnamon sugar on thick toast, pop it under the grill for a minute, and serve with fresh berries for an easy weekend breakfast.
Season white fish fillets with Seafood Spice, grill quickly, and top with a salsa of diced tomato, lemon and herbs. Serve with steamed green beans and a lemon wedge.
My Funky Ouma tins have quickly become the things I grab when dinner needs a little help. A sprinkle here, a drizzle there, and suddenly scrambled eggs or roast veg feel a whole lot more interesting. Simple food, made better. That’s really all we’re after, isn’t it?
